Office Apps in Traditional Mode
Another potential issue for ARM device users: as Microsoft has previously noted, only Office apps, plus Internet Explorer and system-level functions, will be able to run in the traditional Windows desktop on ARM machines, as opposed to the Metro tile-based environment. No other desktop apps will be able to run in the conventional Windows mode on ARM, but other apps will be able to run in Windows 8 traditional mode on machines based on Intel or AMD processors.
Laura DiDio, an analyst with Information Technology Intelligence Corp., predicted that "sooner or later, Microsoft will open the traditional Windows desktop on ARM devices" to apps other than Office's. That assumes, she said, that the company is expecting the traditional desktop to continue on Windows 8 tablets, because they might see it only as a stopgap legacy that will eventually go away in favor of Metro.
Similarly, DiDio noted that road warriors currently will be able to self-manage their ARM tablets, so the Windows to Go USB drive solution is fine for now. But, she said, "over time, as ARM tablets are used more extensively throughout businesses, Microsoft will absolutely need to come up with enterprise manageability."
