Dell on Tuesday announced next-generation Dell Precision mobile workstations aimed at engineering and design professionals, like film editors on movie sets, architects at construction sites, geophysicists in the field and other mobile professionals who need to run graphics or compute intensive apps no matter where they are.
Dell is offering two new systems: the Precision M4700 and M6700. The M4700 is a 15-inch mobile. The M6700 offers fixed-workstation capability and higher performing graphics with a 17-inch display. And the Covet Edition is back for the 17-inch version. It features a Phoenix Red color finish and edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for brighter images and more protection than standard glass.
"I've used Dell Precision mobile workstations for the past six years and the attention to detail Dell put into the look, feel and performance of these new systems elevates them to a new level," said Stephen Taylor, an IT manager at Appalachian State University. "These are truly mobile workstations without compromise and they have changed the way I look at all Dell products going forward."
Specs-wise, the new Dell Precision mobile workstations tap latest Intel Core i5, i7 and Extreme Edition processors with Turbo Boost Technology and a choice of professional graphics including the Nvidia Quadro K-series GPUs and AMD FirePro graphics. Currently, the M6700 is the first and only to offer AMD FirePro M6000 with PCIe x16 Gen 3 for fast data throughput.
Dell also offers DDR3 SDRAM with up to 32GB of system memory and 1600 MHz of memory speed and up to 16 GB of 1866 MHz memory -- the fastest memory available on a mobile workstation -- to access large data sets. They also offer an optional SATA 3 512 GB solid state drive.
Both systems come with expandability in the form of RAID 0/1/5 and three storage devices with up to 1.8 TB of total storage in the M4700 and up to four storage devices with up to 2.8 TB of total storage in the M6700. The workstations also offer ports to let users connect to more formats and devices without carrying around multiple dongles, increase storage and connect to more displays. (continued...)
