If Intel -based thin laptops are Ultrabooks, what should thin AMD-based laptops be called? Hewlett-Packard is calling them Sleekbooks.
The Sleekbooks, new additions to HP 's Envy line, are available in 14- or 15.6-inch models, and offer the most recent AMD Accelerated Processing Units and up to nine hours of battery life. The 15.6-inch retails for $600, the 14-inch model goes for $700, and both run Windows 7 Premium 64-bit.
'$300 Million in Marketing'
We caught up with Current Analysis' Avi Greengart, who noted that, although the Sleekbooks resemble Ultrabooks in most ways except the central processor , Intel is also investing "about $300 million in marketing the Ultrabook brand, and is putting money into bringing down component costs."
Greengart added that Intel also has specific technical requirements before a model can use the term Ultrabook, but at the moment it's not entirely clear what standards, marketing or component support the Sleekbooks will enjoy.
On Wednesday, the computer maker announced an expanded portfolio for its Envy line of thin and light laptops. In addition to Sleekbooks, the additions include two new high-end Ultrabooks, a premium model called the Envy Spectre XT, and an enterprise-ready EliteBook Folio 9470m which, the company said, is built from the ground up "with the security , manageability and reliability features IT demands."
James Mouton, senior vice president of the PC unit, said in a statement that the updated portfolio builds on "the success of the HP Folio and HP Envy Spectre."
HP pointed to some exclusive features on all of its Envy notebooks, including the high-performance audio technology called Beats Audio, CoolSense technology to automatically adjust performance and internal fan settings for a cooler PC, and Imagepad with multi-finger gestural support.
