VMware Rolls Out EVO Software-Defined Data Center

VMware is rolling out plenty of new innovations this week at the VMworld 2015 tradeshow in San Francisco. One of the latest -- VMware EVO SDDC (Software-Defined Data Center) -- is designed to make SDCC build outs and ongoing operations a whole lot easier. It’s a fully automated software suite for delivering the software-defined data center as an integrated system.

VMware EVO SDDC is the the foundation of the company’s Unified Hybrid Cloud platform. Practically speaking, the SDCC extends virtualization principles like abstraction, automation and pooling across all data center resources and services. The result: more efficiency. VMware claims enterprises can cut capital expenditures by as much as 49 percent and slash deployment and provisioning time to hours instead of days.

"Organizations have adopted the software-defined data center architecture to become more agile, responsive and profitable," said John Gilmartin, vice president and General Manager of the Integrated Systems Business Unit at VMware. He expects the technology to help companies leverage VMware’s entire SDCC portfolio in one system that’s easier to deploy, operate and scale.”

Intelligent SDCC Automation

Indeed, VMware is billing EVO SDDC as the easiest way to deploy and operate a SDCC. The technology includes the foundational components of VMware's hyper-converged infrastructure -- VMware Virtual SAN, VMware vSphere and VMware NSX. Together, this sets the stage for compute, storage and networking to converge over one software layer that can run on any commodity x86 infrastructure.

VMware EVO SDDC includes VMware EVO SDDC Manager, an intelligent automation engine that promises to simplify and reduce the time required for power-up, provisioning and monitoring both virtual and physical resources. Meanwhile, the EVO SDDC Manager will pool resources across multiple racks as a single "virtual rack" and can carve out workload domain capacity based on availability and performance requirements.

"As one of the largest data center operators in the world, VMware EVO SDDC allows us to deploy a standardized, reliable and automated infrastructure solution at any data center location and rapidly deliver capacity to our tenants," said Indranil Sengupta, Senior Director of Cloud Service Development at NTT America. "The ability to scale quickly and seamlessly as customer demands rise will also enable us to better manage costs in-line with our total ICT outsourcing capabilities."

Virtual SAN Update

Virtual SAN shifts the management model for storage from the device to the application so IT admins can provision storage for applications. VMware Virtual SAN is designed to be the optimal storage solution for VMware vSphere virtual machines. According to VMware, over 2,000 customers have adopted its hyper-converged infrastructure stack since it was released 15 months ago.

The latest iteration, VMware Virtual SAN 6.1 aims to increase data protection options with the new Stretched Cluster Feature and beefed up VMware vSphere Replication that promises five-minute Recovery Point Objective (RPO). The release also makes possible advanced management and monitoring through deep integration with VMware vRealize Operations, as well as a new Health Check Plug-In for performance monitoring, root cause analysis and capacity planning.

"Our data center is 90 percent virtualized, and I see VMware Virtual SAN as a compelling hyper-converged storage solution for virtual machines," said Manu Mishra, senior systems engineer at the Keck Medical Center. "We started the data warehouse production cluster with three Virtual SAN nodes. When we decided to add two nodes, it was a seamless process. We just dragged and dropped two new hosts into the cluster and our VMware Virtual SAN storage pool grew automatically. For that data warehouse, we no longer have to worry about managing conventional storage and can focus more of our attention on delivering projects that directly support the business."
