Survey Says Custom Secure Apps Rapidly Rising in Enterprise
Custom secure apps are the new black in the mobile software world. A new study from BlackBerry-owned Good Technology reveals that the average company has developed 3.74 custom secure apps to help mobilize key business processes.
The Good Mobility Index Report Q3 2015 also points to an overarching trend in the third quarter of this year: app activations are rising rapidly. Specifically, the report shows a 30 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in app activations -- and it’s not just messaging services. In addition, the study reveals a boost in the number of organizations using multiple apps beyond e-mail.
“The Q3 Good Mobility Index Report validates that enterprises are moving forward to the next stage of their mobility journeys,” said Billy Ho, executive vice president of enterprise product and value-added solutions at BlackBerry, in a statement. “The ability for organizations to develop compelling, secure cross-platform mobile applications using the Good Dynamics platform is one of the key benefits that made the acquisition of Good so important to our strategy.”
What Custom Apps Are Hot?
So what types of secure custom apps, beyond e-mail, are companies building to help mobilize key business processes? Secure browsers have led all app categories for the fourth quarter in a row. That category has seen a 57 percent growth quarter-over-quarter.
All told, secure browsers account for 37 percent of apps that organizations deploy -- and Good expects that to continue. Browsers aside, the list of popular apps includes secure Instant Messaging, as well as document access and editing.
We turned to Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, to get his thoughts on the report. He told us the results of the Good Mobility Index Report are not terribly surprising.
“As enterprises move further along with mobile usage, they naturally progress to leveraging mobile technologies for more business critical processes,” King said. “Fully securing the way those apps engage with and utilize business information is crucial, so relying on tested solutions like the Good Browser is both sensible and wise. As businesses continue their mobile transformation, I expect they will continue or increase their reliance on secure technologies.”
The study also offers an analysis of industry use. At 40 percent, the retail industry is the strongest custom app adopter -- for the third straight quarter. The insurance industry has also aggressively adopted custom apps (31 percent). Other knowledge industries -- such as financial services (25 percent), business and professional services (15 percent) and energy and utilities (13 percent) -- are also strategic custom app developers. And most organizations that build custom apps build more than one, according to the report.
Good News for Apple
In good news for Apple, iOS regained some market share in the third quarter in the custom app world after posting losses in device activations. While not much of a bump, Apple's market share increased from 64 percent to 66 percent. However, Android's market share fell to 31 percent from 32 percent, while Windows dipped to 2 percent from 3 percent.
Although iOS once had a dominating lead in the tablet market, the mobile operating system has lost ground. Drilling into the data, iOS rose from 64 percent to 71 percent of the market’s tablet activations. Android dropped to 21 percent from 25 percent and Windows settled in at 8 percent, down from 11 percent.
From an industry perspective, iOS tops all mobile operating systems for the third straight quarter. Apple garnered 83 percent of the public sector market, 77 percent of the financial services market as well as 77 percent of the education market, and 68 percent of the insurance market. Android beat Apple in the high-tech sector with 52 percent of all activations in that industry, and Android also posted a small lead over iOS in the transportation sector.

This is good news that people are seeing the benefits of private messaging apps. I have been using one at minsh.com for my organisation myself.
